Like, Share and Retweet Your Way to a Loyal Fan Base with Social Media Promotions

Even though social media was created for online social interaction between individuals, that doesn’t mean brands can’t join the fun! And while brands use social media platforms in a slightly different way than your friend sharing a funny cat video, businesses can still use social media in entertaining ways to interact with their fan base.

Successful brand pages share entertaining or interesting content related to their industry, product or service. Brands also use social media as an outlet to answer common questions from customers. As Jason pointed out in a recent post, businesses should use social media profiles to engage followers before immediately promoting their products and services. A fun way to interact with your customers is to run a social media promotion.

What is a social media promotion?

A social media promotion is a contest or drawing that requires fans/followers to participate in some way to enter.

Why should I run a promotion on my social media platform?

The most important reason to run a promotion is to interact with your customers. Remember that social media is two-way communication. Successful brand pages engage with their fan base and don’t constantly sell to them.

In addition to engaging with your fans/followers, doing a social media promotion adds value for your customers and encourages them to come back to your page regularly. What’s more, people who don’t follow your business on social media might see their friends interacting with your business during a promotion and decide to follow your brand too!

Finally, a social media promotion can be used to collect information about your customers. For example, you can ask your customers questions as part of the promotion. Ask them to tell you what products they’d like to see at your store and you might find some popular new items to sell that set you apart from your competitors! Or you can collect customer email addresses for your email marketing list by requiring participants to register for the contest with an email address.

How do I run a social media promotion?

The most important thing to do is first determine what you want to get from the promotion. This will help guide how you execute it. For example, do you want to increase Facebook page likes? Then develop a promotion that centers around increasing your Facebook followers. Encourage your current page fans to share the posts about the promotion so that non-fans will see them and like your page too. If you want more Twitter engagement, ask followers to retweet a tweet to enter, or answer a question you pose using a specific hashtag.

To entice your followers to participate, be sure to pick a giveaway item for the winner that will motivate them to enter. Choose something that your customers would like: gift card or gift certificate to your store, a popular item, a new item you want to promote, or even a seasonal/holiday item.

Finally, make it as easy as possible to participate in the promotion. This is why “Like, Comment, Share,” (Facebook) and “Tweet using the hashtag…” (Twitter) promotions are so popular. The rules to enter are simple to understand and simple for the customer to do.

Don’t Overdo It

Like anything you do with your business’s social media page, don’t overdo it. We don’t recommend doing a social media promotion every week, or even every month depending on your business. This is especially true if your promotions involve sharing or retweeting. Your fans/followers will get tired of it, as will their friends on social media.
